Looking Forward to Looking Back… and then Forward Again.

As any Latin professor will happily share, January is named after the Roman god Janus, a deity of the two-headed variety, with the gift (?) of seeing both the past and the future (two-faced is also accurate, but paints him in a sketchier light these days). It’s pretty nice actually: the start of a new year is chock-full with looking back at the past year, and looking forward to the coming year. Nostalgia and the promise of the new–a pretty tasty and intoxicating cocktail. In fact, we like the mix so much, we’ve managed to stretch it out over the entire first quarter of the year, toss in some trophies, red carpets, and parties, making an entire season out of it. So here we are, at the close of February in the throes of (drum roll) Awards Season. For the most part, this boils down to movies and music, suddenly rooting for your favorite band as if they’re a sports team (which they’re not) competing in something non-subjective (which they aren’t).

Button Up: User Experience in the Real World

Here in Greensboro, NC, at least once a day, I near-mindlessly wind clockwise up one strand of the Greene Street Parking Deck’s double helix, park on my usual level, in my usual space, walk to the elevator, press the button, and take my descent to street level–and then at least once again, hours later, in perfect reverse. Interesting from a certain perspective, but still a pretty mundane experience. So why write about it? Why even bring it up? Because of the button.

Let’s do this.

First of all, thanks for visiting. You’re all busy people with lots to take care of, certainly with no shortage of links to click or sites to keep tabs on. Time and attention are two of the most fought-for commodities going these days. So seriously, we appreciate yours. Secondly, we’re really excited about this. This is such a rich opportunity for us to make some real chemistry happen. We have our official site–our business suit, if you will. It’s sharp, it’s tight, it fits perfectly. Everything in its right place (just like Thom said). This space, this is where the jacket comes off, the tie rests on the arm of the couch, and the drinks are free-poured. We’re looking forward to hanging out here: having genuine dialogue, telling stories, cracking jokes, listening to you, listening to music, sharing cool stuff, relevant stuff, pontificating, making fun of ourselves–and anyone else, if they deserve it.
